Entering The Giant’s Tomb is a key moment in the initial main quest of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. After wrapping up the tutorial for The Great Circle, you dive into a captivating mystery initiated by a giant crashing into Indy’s office at Marshall College and stealing a historic artifact. Your journey will take you through a series of clues, culminating in your arrival at the Vatican. Once there, you will meet Indy’s ally, Antonio, who will provide you with detailed guidance to the Giant’s Tomb hidden beneath the Tower of Nicholas V.
To progress in the main quest titled “The Stolen Cat Mummy,” you must navigate your way into this enigmatic grave site. This quest will require solving various puzzles, unlocking a substantial new section of the Vatican map. Accessing The Tower Of Saint Nicholas
The Altar & Mural Puzzle
After you receive your instructions from Antonio, head to the Tower of Nicholas V. Go inside and make your way down to the lowest level, where you’ll encounter a small chapel (as shown above), guarded by two statues and featuring a beautifully carved stone altar with an impressive stone relief behind it. The relief, termed the “Strange Mural,” illustrates Saint Michael in combat with a demon. Approach the altar’s basin, and interact with it by pouring some wine into the bowl. You’ll notice the center disc of the relief begins to shake.
Next, head to the disc and discover that you can rotate it. The goal is to position it so that Saint Michael is facing up and the demon is facing down. Once aligned correctly, the door will slide open. Proceed inside and navigate down the spiral staircase, which will unlock the Underworld Map. This area can be quite dark, so be sure to pick up the candlestick sitting on the altar before descending. Lighting the braziers scattered throughout is also a good idea to brighten the space.
Exploring The Underworld
The First Gate
Follow the straightforward path down, remembering to swap your candlestick for a torch you’ll find mounted on the wall (just be sure to light it). Soon enough, you’ll reach a dead end with a closed gate that appears locked. However, look to your left, and you’ll spot another torch in a sconce on the wall. Take your lit torch and light the one on the opposite wall. The flames will spread into the adjoining room, causing the gate to open.
The Sacred Wounds Mural
Moving forward, you’ll encounter a fresco of Jesus on the cross, known as the Sacred Wounds Mural. Take note of the Roman numerals on this mural and the basin in front of it, reminiscent of the earlier one you encountered. Approach this basin and pour in some wine. This will reveal levers beneath each Roman numeral, but you won’t be able to use them just yet.
Before proceeding, explore the room and take note of other artworks scattered nearby, each accompanied by its own basin. Your task is to pour wine into each basin to reveal a Roman numeral and align those numbers with the Sacred Wounds depicted in the mural, adjusting each lever accordingly. If you struggle with deciphering Roman numerals, Indy will assist you.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to break through the wall next to the Spear of Longinus statue in order to exit this room, as the door will close behind you upon entry. Additionally, you’ll have to shimmy through a small wall opening to reach the Anointment painting. Once that’s completed, the door will shift, creating an opening for you to pass through.
Continue down the corridor. If you take a quick right and drop into a small hole in the wall, you can crawl through to discover a secret room with a page from an Explorer’s Journal. Use your whip to reach the area above the door for your exit. If you descend into the subsequent hole in the ground, you’ll find another page from the journal by crawling through yet another small opening.
Locating & Opening The Giant’s Tomb
Securing The Burial Chamber Key
Eventually, you’ll find yourself in a room featuring what appears to be a vast well at its center. On the opposite side, a skeleton clutches the Burial Chamber key in its bony hand. Take this key and retrace your steps, leaping over the chasm to reach the gate leading to the Burial Chamber—this moment brings you face-to-face with the Giant’s Tomb.
The Shield Puzzle
Before gaining entry to the Giant’s Tomb, you need to solve another puzzle. Pay attention to the shield-shaped carvings located on either side of the coffin; start by interacting with the one on the left first. This action will activate a mechanism. Then, move to the right shield, which will have rotated. Interact with it to detach it from the wall, place it down, and flip the switch hidden in the space it left behind to open the coffin.
Watch as a cutscene unfolds, culminating in you acquiring the sought-after item: the Warrior Giant’s Parchment. With these challenges behind you, you’re ready to advance to the next step of the main quest in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: making your way out of the Giant’s Tomb.
