Thor Overview in Marvel Rivals
As a Vanguard character in the game, Thor excels at seizing opportunities to confront enemy players and eliminate their weakest links. His abilities offer numerous ways to create chaos, enhancing his sense of invulnerability—being a god certainly has its perks.

Description |
---|---|
Mjörlnir Bash LMB/R2/RT |
Thor uses his Mjölnir hammer to hit enemies at close range, inflicting damage and charging his Thorforce with each strike. |
Hammer Throw RMB/L2/LT |
Thor throws the Mjölnir directly ahead, hitting a target before the hammer returns. This ability consumes 1 Thorforce stack and grants Thor 100 Bonus Health, but the returning hammer deals less damage. |
Lightning Realm E/R1/RB |
This ability creates a small electric zone around Thor, damaging surrounding enemies and restoring 1 Thorforce for every enemy hit. The area stays active for 4 seconds and slows down any foes that pass through. |
Storm Surge LSHIFT/L1/R1 |
Thor spins his hammer and leaps in the selected direction. Changing direction increases damage and distance. This ability consumes 1 Thorforce stack and grants Thor 100 Bonus Health, knocking back enemies upon impact. |
Awakening Rune F/Square/X |
Thor enters a powered state, floating slightly while dealing damage to nearby enemies. His Basic Attacks transform into electric discharges, causing more harm than his usual hammer strikes. This ability consumes 3 Thorforce stacks and grants Thor 200 Bonus Health, but he cannot use other skills while in this state. Lasts for 5 seconds. |
God of Thunder Q/L3+R3 |
Thor ascends into the air and channels his hammer, creating a damaging energy field beneath him. After 1.5 seconds, he crashes down, harming enemies in the area. Players can control Thor’s position while he’s airborne. |
Thorforce Passive |
Thor can accumulate up to 3 stacks of Thorforce, which recharge every 5 seconds. This resource is essential for executing certain abilities and grants additional health, with a maximum of 200 Bonus Health. Damaging enemies with Mjölnir Bash or Lightning Realm increases Thorforce. |
Odinson Reborn Passive Team-Up Ability |
If Hela secures a kill, she revives Thor and Loki at their last location. If they’re already alive, they receive 50 Bonus Health. |
Thunderous Deity Passive Team-Up Ability |
Thor provides Storm and Captain America with enhancements, altering their abilities. Storm can unleash lightning barrages on her targets, while Captain America gains increased movement speed and his shield inflicts extra lightning damage. |
Thor’s playstyle centers around Thorforce, his passive ability that regenerates over time. Most of his skills use Thorforce, providing him with additional health to withstand enemy attacks. However, he prefers to charge directly into battle, continuously gaining extra health to become nearly invulnerable while smashing through the enemy’s strategists and duelists.
With a user-friendly ability set, excellent mobility, and strong attacks, Thor is an ideal option for players wanting to master a Vanguard character, as he synergizes well with various heroes. His Storm Surge serves offensive, defensive, or evasive purposes, while his Awakened state can swiftly overpower even other Vanguards caught off guard by the God of Thunder.
Recommended Teams
Thor synergizes well with most characters, but dedicated healers like Luna Snow significantly enhance his endurance. He can boldly charge into enemy ranks, knowing Luna can heal him from afar, providing support while he wreaks havoc.
Thor’s passive abilities are also crucial. A pairing of Thor and Captain America creates an intimidating Vanguard force. Providing extra movement speed to Captain America is more potent than it appears, further augmenting his damage output. Thor is generally a strong pick against many team compositions, thanks to his ability to quickly engage with Storm Surge.
How to Play as Thor in Marvel Rivals
While Thor revels in the heat of battle, it’s crucial to know when to engage. Rushing into a group with Storm Surge may lead to a quick defeat. Initiating fights is often your main role, but preparation is key.
Thor Combos in Marvel Rivals
- Hammer Throw > Storm Surge > Lightning Realm > Mjölnir Bash > Awakening Rune > Enhanced Mjölnir Bash
- Storm Surge > Lightning Realm > Mjölnir Bash > Hammer Throw > Mjölnir Bash > Awakening Rune > Enhanced Mjölnir Bash
- Hammer Throw > Storm Surge > Lightning Realm > God of Thunder > Awakening Rune > Enhanced Mjölnir Bash
Using Hammer Throw before executing Storm Surge is Thor’s foundational combo. This strategy ensures you gain Extra Health before leaping into action, enhancing your chances of survival. Follow up with Lightning Realm to refresh your Thorforce stacks and continue bashing enemies to finish charging your passive. Finally, activate Awakening Rune to replenish your Bonus Health and strike down your foes.
All Thorforce abilities share a 2-second cooldown after usage. Use this time to quickly refill your passive with hammer strikes.
More often than not, you’ll need to jump on a target immediately. Starting with Storm Surge is effective, especially if you dive into someone threatening your teammates. The knockback from Thor’s jump is incredibly useful for defending your allies, so practice using it defensively as well.
Hammer Throw might feel a bit clumsy at close range; meanwhile, animation-canceling your Normal Attacks with it allows for quick bursts to secure eliminations.
Awakening Rune is undoubtedly your most potent skill, but exercise caution while in this state. It remains possible to be defeated even then, and the Thorforce cooldown begins after you exit this state, leaving you vulnerable for a brief period. Nevertheless, the havoc you unleash in this state can be worth the risk.
When to Use God of Thunder
Thor’s Ultimate ability is a powerful signature move. However, it leaves him vulnerable during the channeling process and does not grant Bonus Health upon use. To mitigate this, use your Thorforce skills beforehand to shield yourself from incoming damage.
Due to its noticeable animation and loud audio, God of Thunder is best deployed against large groups of enemies, making it hard for them to escape. Those caught in the electric field will suffer constant damage while you’re airborne, so maximize this potential.
You can also employ God of Thunder to catch foes off guard from above. Climb to the highest vantage point and initiate the battle with it, catching your enemies by surprise and quickly following up with a combo of Lightning Realm > Awakening Rune to finish them off.
