Iqra University, a well-known institution in Pakistan, is facing criticism for its recent fashion event, Iqra University Fashion Odyssey 2024.
Organized by the Akram Institute of Fashion Design (AIFD) alongside the university, the event featured emerging designers who displayed their collections, with notable models and fashion figures taking to the runway.
A video that went viral from the event showed models wearing striking Western clothing, leading to a backlash on social media. Critics expressed that the university’s name, which holds Islamic importance, contradicts the revealing outfits presented.
One commenter stated, “Iqra, the first word revealed by Allah, is now linked to lack of decency.” Many accused the university of endorsing immorality disguised as creativity, voicing concerns over the younger generation’s fixation on Western styles and trends.
Others pointed out that the event merely mimicked Western fashion without offering any original ideas or respect for cultural values.
