Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an enchanting game filled with secrets waiting to be discovered. Have you ever noticed a shooting star streaking across the night sky of your island? These shooting stars provide a pathway to obtaining Star Fragments, a special item used for crafting unique furniture.
However, shooting stars don’t grace your island’s skies every night. This might leave you wondering how to gather enough star fragments for those sought-after DIY recipes. In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know about acquiring your very own star fragments.
Updated November 13, 2024 by Jacqueline Zalace: Are you wanting to find every recipe that includes Star Fragments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? You’re in the right place; we’ve refreshed this guide to list each recipe that uses Star Fragments and how to create them.
How To Get Star Fragments
To get Star Fragments, wish on shooting stars. From 7 PM to 4 AM on your island, you can see these stars at any time throughout the year.
To help you spot them, they make a twinkling sound as they pass.
Meteor Showers
Shooting stars often appear during Meteor Showers. For this to happen, the sky must be clear with minimal cloud cover. Meteor showers come in two types: light and heavy.
- Heavy Showers: These are announced by Isabelle during her morning announcements. Expect to see a significantly larger number of shooting stars during these events.
- Light Showers: These occur unannounced and can happen several times a week. They feature fewer shooting stars, but they’re still a great chance to collect fragments.
Visiting A Friend’s Island
If you find yourself on a friend’s island or playing online, you can wish on stars during their meteor shower just like you would on your own island. The next day when you return to your own island, the star fragments you wished for will appear on your island, not on theirs.
How To Wish On A Shooting Star
If you want to wish on a star, do the following:
- Make sure you’re not holding anything in your hands (press down on the d-pad to drop an item quickly).
- Look up at the sky by pushing up on the right joystick.
- Press the "A" button!
You’ll know you’ve successfully made a wish if the shooting star sparkles and you hear a sound.
Collecting Your Star Fragments
While you’ll need to log back into the game the next day to receive your star fragments, they will wash ashore along your beaches like shells or messages in bottles.
If you’ve wished on many stars but don’t see many fragments on the beach, don’t worry. They won’t all spawn at once and you can continue checking your beaches throughout the day.
How Many Wishing Stars Can You Wish On In One Night?
Shooting stars will keep falling all night, and you’re free to wish as much as you want.
However, there is a limit to the number of star fragments you can collect in a day. If you are wishing by yourself, the maximum is 20 fragments. For every five wishes made by other players on your island, you will earn an additional star fragment, up to a total of 20. Each player making wishes will receive star fragments on their own islands as well.
So, if you make 20 wishes and other players on your island make 100 wishes, you can collect up to 40 star fragments the following morning!
Different Types of Star Fragments
You can find two main types of Star Fragments throughout the year:
- Star Fragment (yellow)
- Large Star Fragment (blue)
In addition to these, there is a special Star Fragment for each zodiac sign, each having its own distinct color and obtainable only by wishing at the appropriate time of year.
If you’re keen to know more about these zodiac star fragments, here’s a table detailing each sign, the time frame for wishing on them, and their respective colors.
Uses For Star Fragments
Star Fragments can serve as beautiful decorations, but their primary function is in crafting DIY recipes. These special recipes can only be obtained from Celeste, the owl who might visit your island during nights with shooting stars.
Once Celeste is present, you can collect recipes from her, which include various star-themed items.
