Upgrading Basic Units in AoE Mobile: A Quick Guide

In Age of Empires Mobile, your troops form the core of your legions, often proving to be even more vital than heroes. By leveling up your heroes and upgrading your Citadel, you can expand the maximum troop capacity of your legions.

There are four troop types, each featuring seven upgrade levels: Recruit, Trainee, Skilled, Advanced, Veteran, Senior, and Champion. To promote troops, you’ll need to unlock higher-tier troops through research at the university and ensure that your Citadel is leveled up sufficiently. Troops already trained at a lower tier can be quickly upgraded to the highest rank via the army barracks.

Promoting troops involves the following steps:

  • 1) Go to the barracks.
  • 2) Select the tier of troops you wish to promote.
  • 3) Switch from training to promotion by tapping the option on the right side of the screen.
  • 4) Choose maximum quality and commence training your promoted troops.

To gain access to higher rarity troops, you must have both a strong Citadel and an advanced university level. Troops at Tier 4 and higher can only be trained and promoted once you reach the Imperial Age, which requires a Citadel at level 15 and a substantial amount of resources for unlocking.

As you promote your troops, keep in mind the importance of resources. Training and maintaining higher-tier troops requires more resources, so it’s wise to focus on troop promotion passively, especially during the early phases of your empire’s development.

Prioritizing the troops of your strongest hero is crucial, as you can typically only rally one legion during most alliance events. If you’re just starting as a Governor, it’s advisable to avoid training the highest tier troops right away and instead concentrate on upgrading your Citadel and heroes.
