Path of Exile 2 was initially scheduled for early access on November 15, but has encountered another delay—this time a shorter one.

Grinding Gear Games, the developer, announced on Tuesday through a video featuring game director Jonathan Rogers that the release has been postponed by three weeks until December 6. Rogers clarified that the delay does not stem from issues with the game itself. Instead, the team requires additional time to enhance the “server-side infrastructure” related to the transition of microtransactions.

The free-to-play franchise, available on both console and PC, generates revenue primarily through cosmetic microtransactions. Players have accumulated years’ worth of weapon skins, pets, and other decorative elements. Grinding Gear had previously confirmed that players could transfer their microtransactions from both PC and console versions, and that Path of Exile 2 would maintain the same system as its predecessor. However, the implementation has proven more challenging than anticipated for the development team.

“Not only do we have to build several new systems, but we also have to ensure that all the legacy data is compatible with them,” Rogers explained in the video. “We must get it all right so that no one loses anything they’ve paid for, and no one’s account is disrupted.”

Rogers noted that the team could’ve potentially launched on the originally intended date but preferred not to take any risks. He accepted full responsibility for the delay and also mentioned that a live stream will occur at launch to discuss all the exciting content in Path of Exile 2.

The sequel has been in the works for a considerable time, with its announcement dating back to 2019. The launch was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and while a beta was initially set for summer 2024, it has also been delayed to allow for more gameplay refinement.

The team showcased their progress during the Summer Game Fest 2024, with a compelling 30-minute demo that captivated audiences. “It appears to be a robust free-to-play RPG for those who missed out on the Diablo 4 hype or are seeking a new action-packed, dark fantasy adventure,” commented Digital Trends.
