If you’re looking to take on the boss Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint in Diablo 4, you’ll need to gather some Living Steel to summon him. Specifically, you’ll require two Living Steel to summon Grigoire in World Tier Three (Nightmare) and five for World Tier Four (Torment). However, acquiring even a single Living Steel can be quite tough as you first need to collect a special currency.
Aside from Grigoire, there are other bosses to battle in the Season 2 endgame content. You can face five bosses in total: the Echo of Varshan, Grigoire the Galvanic Saint, the Beast in Ice, Lord Zir the Dark Master, and Zuriel the King of Maggots. Defeating any of these bosses grants valuable rewards, but expect to be challenged in the process.
How To Obtain Living Steel
Unlocking the Tortured Gifts of Living Steel Chests with Aberrant Cinders
The most effective way to acquire Living Steel is through Tortured Gifts of Living Steel chests. These chests appear during the Helltide event in Diablo 4, which happens every two hours and fifteen minutes and generally lasts about an hour.
Anyone on World Tier 1 who has completed the campaign can join in, but players must unlock Helltides via a quest in Kyovashad. These chests spawn randomly in the open world during the Helltide event. For a quicker search, you can check out D4Armory to find specific chest locations.
When a Helltide is active, affected areas will appear red on the map. As you take down enemies in this area, you’ll earn Aberrant Cinders, the currency used to unlock chests during the event. Each Tortured Gifts of Living Steel chest requires 275 Aberrant Cinders to open.
Since Season 2 began, the way Living Steel is dropped during Helltides has changed. There are still special chests for Living Steel that cost 275 to open, providing you with 5 Living Steel. Furthermore, any chest opened with Aberrant Cinders during a Helltide will yield 1 Living Steel.
Additionally, there are other opportunities to obtain Living Steel in this season, such as from elite enemies in Nightmare Dungeons, although it’s not a guaranteed drop. Other methods include completing Local and World Events, which tend to have higher drop rates, or finishing certain quests.
Treasure goblins can also drop Living Steel, but since they’re rare, relying on this method for farming isn’t practical.
For instance, the Whispers of the Dead cache reward from the Tree of Whispers and cache rewards from the Season Journey offer potential Living Steel, but the best source remains Helltide chests.
How To Use Living Steel to Defeat Grigoire
Earn the Shards of Agony Drop
Naturally, players are eager to gather Living Steel to challenge the endgame boss, Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint in Diablo 4. Once you’ve collected two or more Living Steel, a “Hall of Penitence” icon will show up on your mini-map in the Dry Steppes area.
To summon and face Grigoire, you’ll need to place your Living Steel on the Light-Touched Altar. Prepare for a tough battle; however, YouTuber Tenkiei has shared tips for defeating Grigoire in a helpful video.
In World Tier Four (Torment), defeating Grigoire will cost five Living Steel, but he will drop Shards of Agony, which can be used to summon the Echo of Duriel boss fight. Regardless of which world tier you’re in, defeating Grigoire will also reward you with the Demonbinder Mount Armor and Penitent Greaves.
Furthermore, he will drop various class-specific rewards, including new items introduced in Season 2, such as Twin Strikes, Saboteur’s Signet, Earthbreaker, Ebonpiercer, and Flameweaver. This makes it worthwhile to take on Grigoire using your Living Steel in Diablo 4.
