Dynamax Gastly has made its debut as the new Max Raid Boss in Pokémon GO, heralding the Halloween 2024: Part 1 event with a chilling flair. This oversized version of the well-known Kanto classic will be available at Power Stops throughout the event, allowing you to team up with up to three other Trainers to take them on with your own Dynamax-capable Pokémon.
If you’re new to Max Raid Battles, they resemble regular Raid Battles but with a twist: only Pokémon that can Dynamax are allowed to join in. During the battle, you can collect Max Energy to power up, enabling your Pokémon to Dynamax. Once this happens, they can unleash powerful Max Moves to hopefully defeat the Max Raid Boss, giving you a chance to catch it afterwards.
Weaknesses of Dynamax Gastly
Four Types That Are Strong Against Gastly
Dynamax Gastly is a Pokémon of the Ghost/Poison type, making it susceptible to Dark, Ghost, Ground, and Psychic-type moves. While you might normally choose Pokémon of these types, the lack of available Dynamax-capable contenders may restrict your options based on what you have captured so far.
It’s critical to remember that the Max Move your Pokémon can use is determined by their Fast Attack type, not their Charged Attack. Therefore, when battling Dynamax Gastly, be sure to select Pokémon with Fast Attacks that can exploit its weaknesses.
Conversely, Dynamax Gastly shows resistance to Bug, Fairy, Fighting, Grass, Normal, and Poison-type moves. It’s best to avoid using these types of attacks, as they won’t effectively damage this Max Raid Boss.
Top Counters for Dynamax Gastly
Greedent is the Best Choice
Your top choice for taking down Dynamax Gastly is Dynamax Greedent. It’s the sole Dynamax-capable Pokémon boasting the right combination of Fast Moves (Bite or Mud Shot) and a Charged Move (Crunch) to effectively hit Gastly’s vulnerabilities. Both Bite and Mud Shot can become effective Max Attacks when Greedent Dynmaxes.
If you don’t have a Dynamax Greedent, you can catch a Dynamax Skwovet by completing the “To The Max!” Special Research quest that’s accessible to all Trainers by logging into the game. After capturing Dynamax Skwovet, evolve it into Dynamax Greedent with 50 Candy, and use Fast TMs or Charged TMs to give it the optimal moveset.
Once you’ve captured a Dynamax Gastly, you can evolve it into Dynamax Gengar, making it a formidable option for engaging Gigantamax Gengar when it launches in Pokémon GO on October 31, 2024.
The ideal scenario for taking on Dynamax Gastly would involve having three Dynamax Greedent in your Max Raid team, although that’s not feasible for every Trainer. A strong alternative is Dynamax Blastoise, equipped with Bite and Hydro Cannon. While Hydro Cannon won’t be super-effective against Dynamax Gastly, using Bite will allow you to unleash a Dark-type Max Move with impressive power.
Another viable option is Dynamax Inteleon, armed with Water Gun and Shadow Ball. While this setup won’t give you access to a super-effective Max Move, it delivers neutral damage that could suffice to defeat Dynamax Gastly. Furthermore, utilizing Shadow Ball can deal super-effective damage in battle, providing an advantage during your Pokémon GO encounters.
