A fresh wave of the DC Universe is on the horizon, and comic enthusiasts have eagerly received their first substantial glimpse of what’s to come. Rather than launching with iconic superheroes like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman, the DCU kicks off with the quirky ensemble known as the Creature Commandos. Brought to life by James Gunn, Creature Commandos aims to connect the dots between 2021’s The Suicide Squad, the 2022 hit Peacemaker, and future DCU storylines.
More than a year after its announcement, the inaugural trailer for Creature Commandos has hit the internet. This over two-minute teaser adeptly showcases several key characters from the series, such as The Bride (voiced by Indira Varma), Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), Weasel (also voiced by Sean Gunn), and Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk).
The trailer also presents a taste of the show’s eccentric vibe infused with its hyper-violent and gory elements, even featuring a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo from a beloved villain from the Batman universe. Fans can view the full trailer below.
In addition to its wild array of monsters, Creature Commandos will prominently feature the animated return of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) alongside Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), the hardened commander of the titular team and father of Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), who meets a tragic end in The Suicide Squad. Viewers will catch a glimpse of Rick Flag Sr. at the 1:50 mark in the trailer, where he engages in combat with none other than Clayface.
The unexpected presence of the Batman villain hints at the established nature of the Batman mythos and his rogues’ gallery within the DCU by the time this animated series makes its debut. The storyline will reportedly pick up after the conclusion of Peacemaker season 1, following Waller as she assembles a team of non-humans to tackle her clandestine missions.
It seems the Creature Commandos will encounter some formidable DC foes as part of their commitments to Waller. However, fans will have to wait until the show’s premiere in December to uncover more about Clayface’s role and the nature of the missions assigned to the team.
Creature Commandos is set to debut on December 5 on Max.
