Stephen King’s Fairy Tale Becomes 10-Episode A24 Series

The recent news regarding the adaptation of Stephen King’s popular novel Fairy Tale presents a mixed bag for movie enthusiasts but is a win for television viewers. Initially envisioned as a feature film under the direction of Paul Greengrass, the project has now transitioned to a television series format.

According to Deadline, Fairy Tale will unfold as a 10-episode series produced by A24. Greengrass will continue to play a role in the project as he collaborates with J.H. Wyman, who will take on the role of showrunner. Wyman boasts a wealth of experience in television, with notable works including Almost Human and Fringe. Along with King and Wyman, Greengrass will serve as an executive producer alongside Peter Rice, the former head of 21st Century Fox. Rice has several upcoming producing credits, including Saturday Night, 28 Years Later, and Warfare.

Known predominantly for his horror narratives, King ventured into darker fantasy territory with his 2022 novel Fairy Tale, which tells the story of Charlie Reade, a 17-year-old boy who discovers a portal leading to a realm where light clashes with darkness. The book was quickly embraced by readers, earning a spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

King’s work continues to resonate with audiences, as demonstrated by several adaptations debuting over the past year. The film adaptation of Salem’s Lot, which is based on King’s 1975 novel, became the second-most streamed feature in the U.S. from October 3 to October 9, according to Reelgood. Additionally, The Life of Chuck, an adaptation of King’s 2020 novella crafted by Mike Flanagan, won the Audience Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

Looking ahead, fans can anticipate two more movie adaptations of King’s works slated for next year. The Monkey Man is set to premiere in theaters on February 21, 2025, while The Running Man will hit screens on November 21, 2025.
