The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has wrapped up its thrilling second season, showcasing an epic conflict that reshapes the destiny of Middle-earth. The season finale naturally paves the way for a third installment. However, Amazon has not yet confirmed the renewal of this prequel series. According to a recent article from The Hollywood Reporter, additional content from Rings of Power is indeed on the horizon for the streaming platform.

Reports suggest that Amazon is “on the cusp” of renewing The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for a third season. Even without official confirmation, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay have been working on storylines for the upcoming season. They have reportedly established a dedicated writers’ room in preparation for season 3. In February, both Payne and McKay secured new three-year contracts to continue their work with Amazon MGM Studios.

The anticipation for renewal comes after Amazon MGM Studios's showcase at the Prime Video UK Upfront presentation in London, where they highlighted The Rings of Power and featured several cast members. THR predicts an official announcement regarding the renewal could be coming this month.

The Rings of Power season 2 primarily centered around Sauron (Charlie Vickers) and his rise to power in Middle-earth. Throughout the season, Sauron shifts his identity from Halbrand to Annatar, the "Lord of Gifts." In this guise, he convinces Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) to forge nine additional Rings of Power destined for Dwarves and Men. Sensing his dark influence, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Elrond (Robert Aramayo), and the Elven realm prepare for a confrontation against the Dark Lord.

During the London event, Amazon Studios CEO Jennifer Salke disclosed that The Rings of Power season 2 attracted over 55 million viewers. She anticipates this season may ultimately match the first season's impressive viewership of 150 million. Nielsen reports indicate that season 1 generated more than 1 billion minutes of viewing time in the week of the season 2 premiere, a slight decrease from the 1.3 billion minutes seen during season 1's initial release.

All episodes of season 2 are now available for streaming on Prime Video.
