Why Did Airbnb Ban Indoor Security Cameras?

Hosts can now no longer install cameras indoors as per the new policy and statement issued by Airbnb.

Airbnb recently made an important announcement regarding its policies concerning indoor security cameras within its listings. They have decided to prohibit the use of indoor security cameras altogether.

With this new announcement, the hosts will no longer have access to any of the indoor security cameras within the whole property.

Previously, hosts were permitted to have indoor security cameras in common areas such as hallways and living rooms. However, they were required to disclose their presence on the listing page. Now, with the new policy in place, indoor security cameras are completely banned.

The reason behind this decision is to eliminate any uncertainty or confusion for both guests and hosts regarding surveillance within the rental properties.

Juniper Downs, the Head of Community Policy and Partnerships at Airbnb mentioned that the goal was to establish clear rules to provide clarity for everyone involved.

However, this announcement and implementation came into being after a discussion with the hosts, privacy experts, and guests as per Airbnb officials.

Moreover, the company in addition to banning indoor security cameras, has also increased the strictness of its guidelines on outdoor security cameras and noise decibel monitors. While outdoor cameras and decibel monitors will still be allowed, hosts must disclose their presence and location in the listing. Decibel monitors must not record or transmit conversations and are only permitted in common spaces.

It has further been mentioned that the implementation of banning indoor security cameras is 30th April 2024. The company has also stated that in case any of the hosts fail to adhere to the rules and regulations they will result in immediate removal from the host’s account on the platform.

It is worth noting that this implementation will only affect a very small portion of host listings on the platform as the majority of the listings do not have indoor security cameras as per the statement issued by Airbnb.
