Lanterns Series Casts Hal Jordan From The DC Universe

Kyle Chandler is set to join the DC Universe in an exciting new role.

According to Deadline, Chandler is currently in talks to portray Hal Jordan in the forthcoming series Lanterns, inspired by the DC comics. The show will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two interstellar officers from the Green Lantern Corps, who are summoned to Earth to investigate a murder. In this narrative, Jordan takes on the role of mentor to the younger Stewart, who is recognized as one of DC’s first Black superheroes.

Josh Brolin was initially considered for the role of Hal but ultimately decided to pass. The search for the actor to portray Stewart continues.

Chandler gained fame for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Coach Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights. His other significant works include Argo, Bloodline, and Manchester by the Sea.

In June, Lanterns was officially granted a straight-to-series order for eight episodes. The show is being crafted by a team that includes Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comic book writer Tom King. Mundy will serve as the showrunner and will co-write and co-executive produce the series alongside Lindelof and King. HBO is producing the series in partnership with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.

The series was first revealed in January 2023 by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios. It will be part of Chapter 1 of the DC Universe, which is officially dubbed “Gods and Monsters.” The duo has likened the project to True Detective, suggesting that it promises high-quality production typical of HBO.

Lanterns plays a crucial role leading us into the main narrative across our film and television projects,” Safran stated in an interview with Variety. “Thus, it’s an essential show for us.”

Years ago, Ryan Reynolds portrayed Hal Jordan in the critically and commercially disappointing film Green Lantern.

Lanterns currently has no set release date, with filming anticipated to start in 2025.
